Hi folks!

I'm Matt Oddo, data scientist and PhD Candidate at the Department of Computer Science of the University of British Columbia. I build tools and research the theory and practice of 'invariant plots' (alternative network visualization) with Tamara Munzner, Stephen Kobourov, and team peers at the InfoVis Group.

I'm Chilean and Canadian, Matías Ignacio Bofarull Oddó 🇨🇱 is my long name, Matt Oddo 🇨🇦 for short, and Matt I. B. Oddo 📖 for publishing purposes.

Work

I have interdisciplinary interests and academic background: biology BSc (2016, UBC-O), earth science MSc (2019, UBC EOAS), and computer science PhD (2027, UBC CS).

Collaborations

Leadership

  • 3MT Lead (since 2024). I organized and led UBC CS's inaugural participation in the university-wide Three-Minute Thesis (3MT) competition, and serve as current event host.
  • CSGSA President (2024 to 2025 term). The Computer Science Graduate Student Association (CSGSA) promotes the academic, mental, and social welfare of all MSc and PhD students at UBC CS, with representatives across all major department committees.

Fun fact about me: I love walking. I do not own a car or bike; walking is my primary method of transportation. Walking affords deep thinking time, cardio, and locomotion -- win win win!
